Seniors Round 1

FIRSTS 4 def Bonbeach 3
A two out 9th inning rally saw the clubs 1sts take the points in the season opener against one of the teams relegated from division 1 last year. The Tigers got away to a great start posting a run in the 1st on a lead off single to Brendan Hopcraft. After stealing 2nd Hoppy scored on Leon Rice’s 2 out single up the middle.
Adrian Rice got the start and worked 4 scoreless innings backed up by very solid defence including an excellent running fly ball by Glynn Kimberley and good work up the middle by Hoppy and Nick Unland. In the top of the 5th the Bluejays finally capitalised on a scoring opportunity and picked up 2 runs on a couple of bleeders and a sacrifice fly.The Tigers tied it back up with a run in their half of the 5th on a lead off walk to catcher David Hair, a sacrifice by Hoppy and aggressive running by Hairy to score on Glynn’s two out drive into left field.
After a scoreless 6th, Andrew Jones took over on the hill giving up an unlucky run on a two out bleeder by the visitors. Credit must be given to right fielder Justin Swanton on this play as his attack on the ball and quick throw prevented a second run from scoring. These are the little things that don’t show up in any stats but are vital from the team’s point of view. Into the home half of the eighth and down by one Glynn monstered a ball just short of the fence in left field. Leon’s ground ball moved him to 3rd and Stuart Chinn tied the game by driving the ball through the 3rd.
With Andrew in a good rhythm and pitching a scoreless 9th the Tigers came out to try and prevent the game going to extra innings. Two out and nobody on pinch hitter Peter Schroeders drove the ball over the left fielders head for a stand up double. A walk to Hoppy brought up Nick Unland who came through with a clutch hit into the right centre alley to win the game.
A great game to open the season not only because of the result but in the way the team hung tough, fighting back three times to either tie the game and finally win it. Continue to play with that mental toughness and we will win a lot of ball games.

SECONDS 6 def Bonbeach 0
A good start to the year 6 - nil against some good pitching from Bonbeach. Excellent pitching from Molly and sound defence from Trent Chivers and Luke Everitt. Johno was great in closing. Offensively some clutch plays from Adam Helleren & Scott groner paved the way for our 6 nil score line.
Great job boys but still plenty of work to do.
THIRDS 12 def Bonbeach 10
Well summer baseball is up and running and the scribe is back to share his thoughts on the 3rds games. A bit of detail in this report so as to get all the names down and you can follow progress each week during the season. We started off at what was once part of the Chelsea tip but for many years has been home to the Bonbeach club. (Ask Trudi about the club house.). Some new faces for the thirds, some with a bit of age ( thanks Scott) but half of the team are still juniors.
Top 1 and Bonbeach are huge by comparison to the young Tigers. Their smallest player is taller than our tallest player ( thanks, again, to Scott). The young Tigers come out to bat and Ben Lewis leads off with walk, followed by a hit to short by team Manager Sean O’Halloran. In trying to beat the throw Sean ran into man mountain at first. This kid, only just 17, was literally and physically, head and shoulders bigger than Sean and that is before we talk about the width. Sean was safe at first but copped a knee in his right thigh which shortly proved to be a game ending clash for him. (He has been hobbling ever since.) A single base hit for Scott Ramsey and a Sac fly for Chris Gray saw us get a run on the board. Hits also for Grant Wilkinson and Caleb Long, who scored Sean, before we went side away with 2 runs for us.
Bonbeach up to bat and Scott Ramsey on the mound pitching to Chris Grey. Nice to see Scott back, and his lovely followers at the game. Wilko is at first, Sean at second, Warren Mynott at third, Ben at short with Philip Yule, Caleb and Liam High in the outfield. A couple of errors saw Bonbeach score 5 runs before we shut them down.
Top 2 and Sean comes out of the game and hobbles to the bench as Matthew Bilski takes his place in the line up and lots of fielding changes. Yuley gets to second on a dropped third strike ( yes, second base because he ran it out hard and the catchers throw went wild). Liam gets a walk, Ben a Sac fly to score Yuley, Bilski gets hit, Scott gets on, then hits for Chris, Wilko and Caleb as we score 5 unearned runs to take the lead. Bottom 2 and the cones being in pays off for Bonbeach as they put one over and score 2. 8 to 7 after 2 digs and lots of red in the book.
Top 3 and no joy for us, 3 up and 3 down. Bottom 3 and Bilski takes over on the mound. Bonbeach score another 2 on some solid hitting. 10 runs to 7 at top 4 and a hit for Scott and some wild pitching including one where Scott got “stole” home running between the catcher and the pitcher standing almost at the plate. Caleb also scores on a wild pitch as we get a couple of runs back. Bottom 4 and no runs for Bonbeach as we go into the fifth dig just 1 run down.
Top 5 and Liam is walked, then gets to second on a passed ball, then steals to third. Ben then scores Liam on another sac fly to even up the game. Bilski hits a double to left field, Scott gets a walk and some aggressive base running sees us score another 2 runs before we go side away. Bottom 5 and Wilko comes to the mount to defend the 2 run lead. Two up, two down, go Wilko, then a walk and a hit as the really big guys are up to bat. With the equalising run at second and their biggest batter in the box, Scott, now at first, takes a great foul fly catch to end the dig, and the game, with the Tigers being the winner. Thanks, again, to Scott! Lots of cheers from the Tigers supporters and a good result to start the season.
Who said size counts, it is all in the way you play the game. The young Tigers did really well against a much bigger opposition. Plenty to work on fielding wise with a bit too much red in the book. Good work in the outfield particularly Caleb at centre taking 3 flies. Only 2 outs at first which is unusual but they were hitting big. Our pitchers did well with Scott and Bilski each getting 3 strike outs and Wilko 1. Batting wise a special mention to top of the order Ben with 2 sac flys, also 2 RBI’s to Chris, Wilko and Caleb. Bonbeach had more hits than us, 10 to 8, but we won by 2 runs, you beauty. Until next week all the best from the scribe.
