Seniors Round 10

9 December 2007

FIRSTS 4 lost to Moorabbin 7

SECONDS 11 def Moorabbin 5

What a closely contested game throughout but the Tiger’s are triumphant against the Panthers and rightly prowl as the big cat of the jungle!

Team effort was produced as defensively we had 16 hits with 3 to Groner, Hair and 2 each to Bons, Chivers and Meldrum.  They knocked them into the gaps and with aggressive base running from all (again) we scored runs in every dig to give us the edge over Moorabbin.  Offensively Sean Meldrum gave his all on the mound and battled it out for almost the entire game and only came off in the last dig when Adrian Rice came on to complete the game.  Perseverance ruled both these pitchers to walk away with the win.

Next week we are at home against Fitzroy and with past games against them to go by this should be a good one!  Go tigers!

THIRDS 12 def Moorabbin 2

There was a flurry of activity just before the game on Sunday as we found out that the rostered umpire had been rerostered to another game.  The scribe dashed to the car to get the umpires gear and we got underway against the Moorabbin Panthers.  They were short of a player and a scorer but we were ended up having an entertaining game.

4 up, 3 down for Moorabbin as we closed out the top of the first with Michael Rice pitching to Ben Lewis, Wilko at first, Ashie at second, Sean at third, Andy at short and the outfielders being Wozza, Scott and Chris Grey.  A couple of walks, a hit for Scott, a sacrifice for Chris and then a double base hit to left field to Ben saw us score 2 runs.  Ben got home on a wild throw and Wozza was LOB after a hit to left field as we go side away with 3 runs on the board.

Another 4 up 3 down for Moorabbin as we come out to bat again in the second.  This time we went one better and scored 4 runs courtesy of a single for Grant, a double for Sean, an error that got Scott on first, and singles for Chris, then Ben and Ashie.  Top 3 and Moorabbin got a couple as they put a few hit into the outfield.  We respond with 2 runs both RBI’s for Chris on a hit to left field.

Top 4 and 3 up 3 down for Moorabbin.  Bottom 4 and we score an unearned run as Wozza and Michael both get on via errors but a double play shuts down our dig after just a few batters.  Top 5 and 4 up 3 down again for Moorabbin as we get to bat again.  A triple base hit for Chris got the noisy crowd up and cheering and he was scored by Ben before we went side away.

The 6th dig provided HUGE amounts of merriment for the crowd.  The scribe had taken a couple of solid hits during the game but carried on to the delight of the crowd.  They were however querying the occasional call but at least the Moorabbin batter and the umpire knew what the count was.  With a smile on his face the first up batter for the panthers got to first and then to the delight of the crowd made it to second and then to third.  However, the blank in the line up hurt Moorabbin again with the third out as he ended up stranded at third much to the disappointment of the boisterous crowd.  Wozza’s mum did have mixed loyalties as her son was playing for the Tigers but her brother was playing for the Panthers.  She will have an interesting family BBQ at Christmas with lots of talk about baseball.

Andy Williams got on via a hit pitched ball and he was later scored by Sean as we ended the game with a 12 to 2 win.  Lots of bruises for the scribe, many, many laughs for the crowd ( Ben’s mum up in the score box wanted the same thing that the crowd was having!!) and a game played in good spirits by both teams.  We scored in every dig with Chris one of the batting stars with a double and 2 singles and Ben batting in 4 RBI’s.  Michael, who had come up from the 4’s, pitched well and we generally fielded well although a couple of red marks in the book.  Special mention to Sean at third for a well timed leap into the air to take a well hit high line drive that got lots of applause.  Wilko had a big day at first.

As to the ladder, we are still second on the ladder behind Mulgrave and in front of Fitzroy on percentage and a game in front of Bonbeach.  We have three big games coming up as we will play the top three teams.  Firstly we are at Fitzroy next Sunday for the last game before the Christmas break.  Fitzroy defeated Mulgrave on the weekend so we will need to be at our best.  Our first game back after Christmas on 13 January will be against Mulgrave at home and the following week we are at Bonbeach.  Lots of position changes in the top four are possible after the next three rounds.  Until next week at Fitzroy all the best from the scribe.

FOURTHS 4 lost to Moorabbin 6

FIFTHS 1 lost to Blackburn A 19

Today we faced Blackburn A who are the benchmark of this division.  Despite the end result there are a lot of positives that can be taken from this game.  On of the main ones is that if you take away the two innings that Blackburn did all of damage it was a 2 – 1 ball game.

We showed some improvement on the hill with fewer walks being thrown by both pitchers Tim and Scott but both needs to work hard on their ball to strike ratio.

We scored in the third innings with Narelle picking a walk then Rob Jones chipped in with a stand up double (one bound from the fence! – should have put the cones closer Rob) then your truly putting a ball into left scoring our only run.

Our fielding today as a whole was pretty good with only a couple of errors.

Hitting  - Rob Jones 2 (1db), Goose 2 with singles to Leggy Snr & Gottschy.

The forty year old fat rookie.
