Seniors Round 2

FIRSTS 10 def Ormond / Glenhuntly 2

Following Rowan’s stellar performance in the magoos the first game was probably always going to be a bit of an anti climax.

To our credit though we knuckled down to the task and put in a very solid, if at times a little workman like, game to comfortably account for the home team. We again got away to a terrific start with Hoppy hitting the games first pitch into left field and ultimately scoring on Leon’s two out single.

Sean Meldrum got the start and worked his way through 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 scattered hits. One of the most pleasing stats from our pitchers in both the games so far has been the lack of walks. It is amazing how many lead off walks finish up scoring and eliminating this goes a long way to minimising the oppositions scoring opportunities.

Defensively we were again very solid with the highlights being a fine play from Michael Oxworth to the plate via Brendan Simmons to stop what at the time was the potential tyeing run and the three double plays.

Offensive highlights were :
- 4 hits to Brendan Simmons with the other at bat being a fierce line drive that the first baseman managed to get a glove on
- 3 to Leon including a solo bomb in the 3rd
- 2 hits a piece to Kimbo and Chinny including a monster grand slam from Kimbo in the 6th to really break the game wide open

Upwey FTG 100 014 030 10 runs 16 hits 1 error
Ormond G/Huntly 001 001 000 2 runs 8 hits

Hits : Simmons 4; Rice 3; Kimberley, Chinn 2; Hopcraft, Unland N, Oxworth, Schroeders, Cheesman 1 each

Pitching :
Meldrum 6 IP 7 H 2 K’s 2 BB 2ER
Unland L 2 IP 0 H 2 K’s 0 BB 0 ER
Rice A 1 IP 1 H 1 K’s 0 BB 0 ER

SECONDS 31 def Ormond / Glenhuntly 0

Pitcher Rowan Johnstone throws "perfect game" to seal victiory.

31 - 0. Now you would think that was a really good win by the boys but we had something very special happen.

Johno our starting pitcher in his second game back after a year off with a broken leg and broken wrist let everyone know he was back. Facing the bare minimum 21 batters in a 7 innings 10-run rule game, he struck out 16, the other 5 didn't get the ball out of the infield. The "perfect game". No hits, no walks, no runs, nobody on base. Well done Johnoand to all the boys for helping him achieve the great feat.

We also had some outstanding batting as you can see from the score line. Cheesy with 5 hits along with Grones and Storky with 4 each. Everyone else got either 2 or 3 hits each.

Well done guys but still a lot of work to b e done!!!!!

THIRDS 10 def Ormond / Glenhuntly 7

With Sean and Matty Bilski out with injuries it was a bit of a challenge to get a full strength team out on the Diamond at the home of the Tigers. However, a couple of new faces Graham Ashburn and young Lee Bertrand thankfully filled in the gaps. We played Ormond Glenhuntly who have come up from third division last season and we welcome them to second division.

Ormond started well and we had some red in the book as they scored 2 runs in the top of the first. Scott Ramsey started on the mound and he collected 3 strike outs for the dig. Scott, as it turned out was in for a big day. Indeed he had a big weekend, selling real estate and celebrating a significant birthday for the Ramsey family and that was just on Saturday. In the bottom of the dig we did not impress with the bat and went 3 up 3 down.

Top 2 and another 3 K’s for Scott. Bottom 2 and Chris Grey gets the Tigers batting up and going with a three bagger to centre field, Caleb scores Chris with a hit to right filed, Yuley gets a single and Wozza scores Caleb with a hit to right field. 2 runs for the Tigers to even the score, 2 to 2, after 2 digs but watch out for Richie Benaud impersonators.

Top 3 and 4 up, 3 down for Ormond with the Tigers infield getting into the action including a big dig for young Lee at short stop. Bottom 3 and we get some more runs on the board. A succession of hits starting with Ben Lewis (whose mum kindly scored and the book is an absolute work of art - puts me to shame), a 2 bagger for Scott with Ben running all the way from first to home, a single to centre for Graham, Scott gets home on a wild pitch, a single for Chris that scores Graham, a muffed fly for Caleb sees him get to second and score Chris, a single for Lee that scores Caleb, and a single for Yuley that scores Lee. 6 runs to finish 8 to 2 at the end of the dig.

Top 4 and 4 up, 3 down for Ormond, including a caught stealing at third from catcher Graham. Scott leads off with the bat and a single to right field, more single base hits for Graham, Chris and Lee as we score another 2 runs. As we start the 5th dig there is a change on the mound as Wozza comes in to test his arm. Ormond get three runs and Wozza picks up a couple of strike outs with a bit more red in the book against the Tigers. Bottom 5 and Wilko leads off with a single to right field and Scott gets another single but no runs for the Tigers as we go into the 6th with the score 10 to 5.

Top 6 and a couple of walks before Wilko takes over from Wozza during the dig. Ormond put on 3 runs with a couple of hits before we shut them down. The umpire calls game with the Tigers getting a 10 to 7 win. Everybody got at least a hit with Scott and Chris getting 3. Scott had a big day on the mound picking up 7 strike outs in his 4 digs. The crowd enjoyed the sunshine and had a few things to cheer about. Still some red in the book against the Tigers with Ormond getting 3 unearned runs. More work needed to improve our fielding but it is early in the season.

Until next week at Moorabbin all the best from the scribe.

FOURTHS 17 def Ormond / Glenhuntly 6

GREAT GAME....GREAT TEAM !!!!!

With little knowledge of our opposition we approached the game with a positive and aggresive manner which carried through the whole game.

Michael Rice held the opposition at bay with a well disciplined time on the mound and only conceded 4 runs over 6 digs. Showing more power and accuracy Michael is developing well and looks a good betfor promotion in the near future. Tim Arnett came in to seal the match for the last 2 digs and maintained the quality of our strong attack from the mound.

Tim's speed and increasing accuracy holds great promise for his future abilities in this valued position in our team  WELL DONE GUYS!!!

Our attack on the opposition paid great dividends with the Tigers gaining the lead early in the battle and holding and increasing our scores with each dif. Ormond had a strong team who did not get the chance to provide a strong challenge as the game moved on to time and game.

We continued to increase our attack with 5 runs in the last dig resulting in a 17 to 6 win.

Team batting was a strong point will most players making contact or gaining 1st on the walks offerred by their pitcher. Base stealing and running was another strength with most of our advances being succesful. Welcome back to Geoff Williams who broke his variable batting with a strong double to right field, he was a happy guy.

Our defence was equally as strong highlighted with a neat double play from Andy Williams to Rusty to Michael Yung at First base. That performance added to our positive and we maintained a strong shield to the opponents infrequent number of hits with responsible fielding and accurate throwing to our targets.

Our base running and stealing was excellent except for an out at 3rd when thew runner (no name) heard a call from the dugout to go11(again no name of the vocal kokel who apologised later in the battle).  A goog lesson learnt I hope.

There was a balance in our team and great support for each other, I was very pleased with such a great TEAM effort.

More goodies to come during the season This was the best performance I have enjoyed since coaching at Upwey and I know that there is more of the same to come during this season

Your very proud Coach  Jonesy the Elder

FIFTHS 4 lost to Cheltenham 14

Today’s game was difficult from the outset as we only started with seven players. Despite this we took the field with a mix of youth and experience to try and do the best we could given what we where up against.

Despite the difference in the score line we remained competitive all day. In the early part of the game we where feeling our way, just hanging on and trying not to let the opposition run away. As the game progress we got a couple of runs on the board and we back in the hunt but could not get enough momentum to turn the result around.

On a positive note some of the highlights where:-
• Good first up pitching performances by Chin and Scot both throwing four innings.
• A text book 5-4-3 double play.
• Unusual outfield positions attracting Fly ball’s with out having to move.
• Bobby steals a Base!
• Solid fielding performance by all with few errors.

We will give these guys a real good run for their money next time with a full squad.

The forty year old fat rookie.

WOMEN lost on forfeit to Springvale
