Seniors Round 3
21 October 2007
FIRSTS 9 lost to Moorabbin 15
The Tigers first nine under went a little reality check against the Panthers going down 15 to 9 after controlling the early part of the game.
Whilst the scoreline is probably not a real picture of how close this game was, never the less the visitors deserved their victory as they played more consistently over the full nine innings and took advantage of their opportunities a little better than we did.
The most pleasing aspect of the game for us was the continued good form of our hitters – 9 runs on 13 hits is going to see you win most games you play in. Michael Oxworth led the way with 4 hits and Brendan Cheesman, promoted for his first game in the ones this season, had 3.
The pitchers also did their job with Adrian Rice pitching into the sixth before being relieved by Rowan Johnstone. Sean Meldrum closed out the ninth to get some work in for next week.
The salient lesson to come out of this game is to beat quality opposition you simply must execute the basics, if you don’t you will be made to pay big time. It seems that our division will be fairly even and we look forward to our next outing at Fitzroy this Sunday where a victory would see us move back to near the top of the table.

SECONDS 9 def Moorabbin 1
After last weeks easy win, the reserves knew they had a tougher match against Moorabbin ahead. With trying weather conditions the game started slowly with Lucas Unland on the mound but he found his stride and put them away in the first dig. Luke Everitt started off our offence brilliantly with a double and the batting continued throughout the game with 11 hits. Three of these were delivered by Andrew Jones who knew that it was only time before he found his rhythm again after his style from the week prior. The pitching remained strong for the rest of the game and with Anthony Bons coming in to finish Moorabbin off in the seventh dig the guys limited the opposition to just one run and comfortably won 9 -1. Keep up the team work guys!

It was a mixed team for the threes as we took the diamond at Moorabbin on Sunday. Sean was back from injury testing out his leg and we gladly had Peter and Geoff Williams helping us out as we had the bare nine. Without being too rude Peter and Geoff certainly helped lift the average age of the team as we have 4 juniors in the team.
Top 1 and Ben Lewis leads off and gets hit to put him on first, Sean then hits a double to right field and that certainly tested his ”corky”, Wilko hits a single, but then a couple of outs including Ben being out at home plate. With 2 down we then showed just what team batting is all about and strung together 6 hits which combined with a couple of walks and some aggressive base running saw us score 8 runs for the dig. Sean and Wilko each picking up 2 hits and Caleb had the dubious honour of being the second and third out. You never give up as the third out is often the hardest to get and we batted through the entire order with 2 down.
Bottom 1 and Wilko is on the mound pitching to Ben behind the mask. Peter Williams at first, Yuley at second, Wozza at third, Sean at shortstop (boy did he have a big and lucky day), with Liam, Caleb and Geoff in the outfield. Wilko pitched to 6 batters and collected 2 strike outs with no runs scored and Sean was very lucky with an infield fly call.
Another run for the Tigers in the next dig and Peter Williams was very glad he had his helmet on. As lead off batter he lead with his head as the ball clunked into the helmet. A single for Wozza later scored Pete before we went side away. Bottom 2 and Moorabbin get what turned out to be their only hit for the game before we sat them down.
Top 3 and Liam leads off with a single to left field, Sean gets a single, Wilko scores Liam, Caleb scores Sean, Pete scores Caleb as we score 2 runs from 2 down.
Bottom 3 and 4 up 3 down for Moorabbin with no runs and a couple of outs for Sean on throws to Peter at first. 12 nil after 3.
Top 4 and Liam gets a double to left field, Ben gets a single, Sean gets a walk, Liam scores on a wild throw, Caleb gets a single, Pete scores Ben, Yuley scores both Sean and Caleb, who ran like the proverbial rabbit to get home from second, before we go side away. Bottom 4 and again 4 up 3 down for Moorabbin with the first out being a foul fly by Wozza at third then a great double play for Yuley catching a line drive then putting out the runner who was on second.
Top 5 and no joy for the Tigers as we go 4 up 3 down but only after Geoff Williams copped a hit pitched ball right on the knee. Bottom 5 and 3 up 3 down for Moorabbin as the Tigers get a good win 16 nil. Defensively we did very well. Wilko, although struggling on occasions, hung in there and pitched the entire game picking up 5 strike outs. However, most impressive was our fielding with not even a hint of an error and plenty of good outs.
Offensively we had a great day with the bat and good aggressive base running that put pressure on Moorabbin. Everyone, but one, got at least 1 hit and again everyone, but one, getting at least 1 RBI. Yuley was the star with the bat picking up 3 hits and 4 RBI’s. Liam and Sean also both picked up 3 hits for the day. 2 hits for Ben, Wilko, Caleb, and Wozza with a single for Pete. Most pleasing was the team batting as we consistently strung together hits which combined with a couple of walks saw us getting runs in every dig except the last. We scored 13 of our runs from 2 down, go team!!
Next week Fitzroy at home. Until then all the best from the scribe.
