FIRSTS 11 def Mulgrave 5
Following the narrow 5 – 4 loss to Sandringham on Thursday night the Tigers faced off against Mulgrave in what was a must win game.
Young lefty Andrew Jones, who had closed out the mid week fixture, got the start and pitched well through 3 and 2/3rds innings conceding just one earned run in the visitors 3 run third frame. Jonesy also helped himself out with 3 successful pick offs of runners on first base with what is arguably the best left handers move going around.
After a tentative start offensively the Tiger bats really came to life in our half of the 3rd picking up 4 runs on the back of some great 2 out hitting from Nick, a perfect running bunt from Hoppy and powerful drives from Leon, Mitch and Pete.
Sean Meldrum took over on the hill and pitched extremely well, changing speeds intelligently through 4 and a 1/3rd innings of scoreless work, aided by a couple of very well executed double plays.
For the first time this season our bats continued to press in every inning tacking on 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th and a telling 4 more in the 7th. Nick Unland collected 3 hits for the day and along with Cheesies 2 and Scotty Groener’s 1 meant our 7, 8 and 9 hitters had contributed 6 of our 13 hits.
This is were we can really hurt teams – continue to get runners on and give Kimbo, Leon and Mitch the opportunity to drive in runs then we are going to post winning scores.
The only sour note to the day was the injury Pete Schroeders sustained while running the bases. Fortunately nothing is broken and he should be back for the Sandy game on Sunday week.
Well done to everyone on Saturday, our best all round performance so far and the scoreline is a true reflection on the game.
But be wary – the league is very even and no team should be taken for granted. We must turn up every week prepared for a big game, if not we will get run over.
