Seniors Round 6
11 November 2007
FIRSTS 4 lost to Werribee 8
Following last weeks impressive victory over Mulgrave the Tigers ventured to Werribee to take on a Giants line up yet to register a win.
On paper the Tigers were putting close to there strongest line up for the season into a game where a victory would see us move right up near the top of the ladder.
But as wise men have said this is a game played on green grass not paper and with young right hander Taylor Rowe on the hill the Giants held Upwey scoreless through 6 innings while they posted 2 in the 1st and 3rd and tacked on 1 in each of the 5th and 6th, the latter on a ridiculous balk call.
After squandering a number of previous opportunities the Tigers finally put up 3 in the 7th and after holding the hosts scoreless in their half an additional run in the 8th meant we were back in the hunt.
Unfortunately Werribee then tacked on 2 more in their half and although we got a couple of runners on in the last it was all too little to late.
For the Tigers Michael Oxworth picked up 4 hits and Leon Rice continued his fine form with 3.
We travel to Sandringham this week looking forward to re kindle the offensive spark and solid defence that was a highlight of the winning games earlier in the season.

THIRDS def Werribee
It was good to play after missing out last week because of the rain, however we needed the rain a lot more than we needed to play baseball. We played Werribee who have come up from third division this season. They are a developing team but they were still the team to beat on Sunday.
We started with Scott Ramsey on the mound refreshed after his short holiday overseas, Graham Ashburn behind the mask, Peter Williams at first, Jordan Elliott at second, Sean at third, Matty Bilski at short and the outfield of Chris Grey, Wilko and Yuley. Perfect start for the tigers with 3 up 3 down. However we did not set the world on fire when we batted as although we had 5 batters up to the plate we failed to score a run.
Second dig and Scott was having a bit of trouble finding the strike zone. Despite a few walks we were able to shut them down without scoring and Scott got back on track and picked up a couple of strike outs. Again we had 5 batters up but again we failed to score. Both teams were having trouble getting runs on the board.
Third dig and 4 up 3 down for Werribee as the outfield got into the game with a couple of catches. Bottom three and at last we got some runs on the board. Jordy gets on with a hit to centre field, Chris scores Jordy, with another hit to centre field, Bilski gets on, again to centre field, then Wilko scores Chris before we go side away with 2 runs on the board.
Top 4 and Werribee get their first hits for the game but we shut them down before any runs are scored. Another couple of strike outs for Scott. Bottom 4 and we get some momentum up as Graham gets a walk, Sean gets on first and races to second on a wild throw, Jordy gets on via a muffed fly, Scott gets walked as Graham scores on a passed ball, Chris then clears the bases with a three base hit to centre that scores Sean, Jordy and Scott. Well done and that got the crowd up and cheering. Bilski gets walked, Wilko scores Chris again, and Wozza, who had come into first base, scores Bilski with a hit to left field. We go side away after scoring 6 for the dig with 5 of them being unearned
Top 5 and Werribee get a couple of hits before some action at first sees the Tigers shut them down after scoring 2 runs. No need for us to come out to bat as Umpire Searle calls game and the Thirds have a win.
It took until the bottom of the third for the game to really get going and a few lessons have been learnt. Defensively we did well with not even a hint of an error for the Tigers in the field and some good outs as well. Well done!! Offensively we did not exactly set the world on fire, except for Chris with a single and that crowd pleasing triple. We did get the job done though with 2 hits for Wilko and singles for Jordy, Bilski and Wozza and some aggressive base running.
Next week at home again, against Sandringham then we are back to the top of the fixture as we will play Bonbeach again at home. Unfortunately some hiccup with the Baseball Victoria score system as no results or ladders are up.
See you next week at home. The scribe
FOURTHS v Werribee
FIFTHS 1 lost to Doncaster B 17
What a complete turn around from last week, instead of hand it out we where on the receiving end. However the score does not truly reflect our efforts.
We took to the field in the first innings and had them with two out after the first two batters due to a regulation groundout to Gotchy at short and a fly ball taken by Tim Watson in leftfield. Doncaster put two runs on the board with a hit and a couple of walks. Tim Annett closed out the innings with strike out.
Our offensive innings showed some promise with all four batters hitting the ball into play unfortunately three of these when straight to fielders! The highlight of this innings was Scott Legge’s hit into right field after winning the battle in the box against a crafty old fella on the hill.
In the second innings our opposition where able to put seven runs across due to a combination of hits, errors and a couple of walks. The outs where all flyballs with your truly showing some range to grab a pop up at third and outfielders Brian Gaggle (Goose) and Beau Jenkins holding catches
In the second innings again we got bat to ball but could not convert into hits and where able to get a runner to third with one out but could not get him home.
In the third it was more of the same with walks and well place hits seeing opponents putting over six runs. The outs for the innings where a strike out by Scott Legge who was now on the hill. Then team heavy weights (Jones & Legge Snr) completing a ground out 4 – 3 and Tim Annett with an unassisted put out at third.
Our third innings saw us put our only run across. Your truly was able to poke the ball between short and third to get on base. Steve Thompson, hit behind the runner (straight to the 1st Baseman) to put me up to second. Goose then don’t get all of it and flied out to third. Beau Jenkins came up and with two out put a nice bleeder over second base allowing me to come home.
A change of strategy on the hill with Gotchy starting the fourth throwing his gravity droppers. There first batter hit one straight back from where it came and Gotchy gloved it and threw him out at first. The remaining two out’s where courtesy of a double play with the batter hitting to goose now at second base who flipped it to Tim, who pivoted at second and threw in time to get the runner the runner at first. (I will add that the batter was one of the slowest runners in the league)
For our final innings we did get some runner on but did not convert them
All in all we played a lot better in the second half but need to do the little things offensively if we are to be completive against the top sides in our grade.
Hitting
M.Gottchling 2 (, 2db’s), Scott Legge 2, Legge Snr 2 with singles to R.Jones and B. Jenkins.
